WASHINGTON - About 200 people held a demonstration in front of the White House demanding the closure of Guantanamo. Prison located at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the United States was used to catch terrorists without trial.
The protesters wore orange inmate as used by the prisoners who are in guanatanamo. They chanted an appeal asking the U.S. government to close the prison now.
"We have continued to listen to the reasons for the tired excuse issued by the government, the prison should be closed," said Zeke Johnson, a human rights activist who took part in the demonstration, look told AFP on Saturday (12/01/2013).
"This is a human rights issue and not a political issue, gave the prisoners in Guantanamo trial or release them," he added.
In the 2008 election campaign, President Barack Obama pledged to close the controversial prison. But his desire was thwarted by members of the U.S. Congress.
Congress prohibits Guantanamo detainees to be transferred to prisons in the United States. Often, the U.S. government asked other countries to want to hold detainees at Guantanamo are.
Currently Guantanamo holds about 166 detainees who were allegedly involved terrorism. From the number of detainees there are 55 people that are not considered dangerous to the security of the U.S., but the U.S. government can not find a country willing to accommodate them.
