BRUSSELS - Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Russia should be more transparent in explaining the details of the war exercises to be carried out in the Baltic region. Three members of NATO in the Baltic countries also began to worry about the war exercises.
"We do not have detailed information about the Russian military exercises. The most important thing is to show openness and transparency about the war exercises," Rasmussen said, as quoted by Bloomberg, on Friday (02/01/2013).
"We do not view Russia as a threat to NATO, and NATO also no never threaten Russia. Yet we continue to protect the member countries of the NATO alliance," he said
Russian war games held in the Baltic region is quite alarming Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are members of NATO. NATO reaffirmed its commitment to maintain the security of its member countries and NATO fighter jets patrol will also remain on the air on top of the existing three member states in the Baltics.
NATO will also implement a system of collective defense with Poland and other countries in the Baltic region in a military exercise this year. It had been decided by the NATO Summit in Chicago, United States (U.S.).
In 2012 then, Russia sent its warplanes to the Baltic Sea to participate in military exercises BALTOPS 2012. BALTOPS is held annual military exercises in the region and has been running since 1971.
But in 2013, the Russians reportedly planning a joint military exercise in the Baltic Belarus. The exercise was held in September 2013, but some do not know the details of the execution time. (AUL)
