JEMBER - Central Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research (PUSLITKOKA) were housed in Jember, admit at first they did have difficulty in developing seeds to plant coffee and cocoa. However, all that changed after they tried a system called somatic embryogenesis (SE).
Somatic embryogenesis (SE) is a system that aims to improve seed production in large scale. According to the Director Puslitkoka, Teguh Wahyudi, Indonesia has many kinds of coffee production is still arguably the pre-eminent small, it is a potential if using this system, the type of coffee seed Indonesia will be more that comes to the surface.
"Although somatic embryogenesis technology can be used fairly recently, we have confidence in the system because it can increase seed production significantly. System also has given us a solution to maintain and breed seeds of the coffee plant and the cocoa," said Teguh, told reporters in Jember, Friday (05/17/2013).
This system also has the advantage of which is able to retain the properties of a seed, and development with higher capacity. Especially for cocoa, one example of a very striking difference between the seeds using somatic embryogenesis (SE) and the origin continued, is to the SE seedlings will grow new stem following the first branch.
As for the seed that use native system continued, cocoa will grow since the beginning of the development branch. In addition, cocoa plants also must have hold plants, but not the origin of the plant can be used as shade cocoa.
Puslitkoka themselves reveal that they use lamtoro as shade plants. The research center is also only use special lamtoro plants that do not have seeds, in order for the seeds of future lamtoro will not damage the cocoa plant that is experiencing growth.
"Not only focusing on seed and fruit products only, we are now also trying to process the cocoa into another product. One example of other products made from cocoa that we are developing is a liquid and solid soaps," said Teguh. (FMH)
