OSLO - The European Union won the Nobel Peace Prize for a historic role in uniting the continent. The award was given as a morale boost for the block on their struggle to overcome the debt crisis.When announcing the award in Oslo, the Chairman of the Committee Thorbjoern Jagland said, the EU has become the key in changing Europe "from continent to continent wars of peace." Jagland praised the 27 EU countries for rebuilding after World War II and their role in spreading stability after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
"This is a message for Europe to do everything they can to secure what they have achieved and move on," Jagland said, as quoted by Reuters on Friday (12/10/2012).
Gifts valued at $ 1, 2 million will be awarded in Oslo on December 10. The decisions taken by the five-member panel led Jagland who is also the Secretary General of the Council of Europe it was unanimous. EU wins of 231 candidates, including the Russian dissident and a reconciliation of the religious leaders of Muslim-Christian workers.
The European Union is mired in a worsening crisis with the euro, the common currency is owned by 17 countries. So, this is a surprise gift for the woes of the European Union today.
Many Norwegians oppose the EU because it sees it as a threat to state sovereignty. "I think this is absurd. In Latin America and other parts of the world they will see it quite differently than in Brussels, Belgium. States is a trading block that contributes to keeping many countries in poverty," said the leader of the Anti-EU Norway , Heming Olaussen.
Norway, the peace prize, has voted "no" twice to join the European Union, in 1972 and 1994. This country has prospered outside the European Union thanks to a very rich oil and gas resources.
Professor of International Politics at Oslo University Janne Haaland Matlary who has twice been nominated for the European Union Prize, praised the award. "Since the beginning of the European Union has been the most effective peacemakers in the world with coal and steel union in the 1950s.
