JAKARTA - There is a misconception in the Chinese claims in the South China Sea. Most of the Chinese people as well as outsiders think China claims the entire South China Sea region, but China can claim only the islands and reefs in the South China Sea.
It was submitted by the Dean of the school of international studies S. Rajaratnam, Singapore, Barry Desker, in a discussion held Bakrie Center Foundation in Jakarta, today.
"Map of the South China Sea issue in China's passport to make a lot of people think China conquer the whole South China Sea. This is a misnomer," said Desker, in Jakarta, Friday (12/14/2012).
The man said that the United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) stated that only one country can claim to islands or reefs. But the country can not claim a sea as its own.
Desker also mentions historical factors underlying China's claim to the South China Sea is not recognized in UNCLOS. "You can not claim the territory as based on history, things like that is not recognized in UNCLOS," said the man who is also a former ambassador to Indonesia.
China itself is known to have ratified UNCLOS. This makes the Bamboo Curtain country should follow the rules contained in the UNCLOS. (Faj)
