300 Myanmar Muslims flee after riots

Lashio - Approximately 300 Muslims fled Myanmar in a monastery in the city of Lashio, after the riots occurred. They were guarded by police and military personnel who anticipate an attack from Myanmar extremists in the region.

Lashio town had streets filled with the extremists who carry guns, but this time the condition gradually recovered. A vegetable vendor who had to tell his story to save themselves from attack.

"They (the extremists) attacked all Muslims with machetes and sticks of wood," said vegetable seller named Win Ko, as quoted by AFP on Friday (31/05/2013).

"My family was forced to hide in a neighbor's house, after hearing mass comes from the streets. Several of the masses that are my neighbors and they could appoint their own houses belonging to Muslims," he added.

Win Ko himself said he could as long as his family was escorted by soldiers from his hiding place. Authorities steer families toward a monastery.

"I saw an elderly couple Muslim neighbors, beaten by a mob. Neighbor I was beaten while trying to escape with their car," he explained.

The riots lasted for two days. Continued unrest had occurred on Wednesday, May 29, but security forces managed to disperse the mobs who want to carry out attacks against Muslims in Lashio. (Faj)
